‘Extraction 3’ Netflix: Everything We Know So Far

Netflix will continue to expand one of its most popular film franchises with the announcement coming in June 2023 that Chris Hemsworth will be returning as Tyler Rake for Extraction 3. We’ll keep track of everything you need about Extraction 3, including the plot, cast news, production updates, trailers, and the Netflix release date.

First released in 2020, Extraction is one of the many big swings Netflix has taken in the big-budget action movie genre.

Sam Hargrave is a constant throughout the series, having served as the director on both the first and second movies that were released in April 2020 and June 2023, respectively. Similarly, both were written by Joe Russo, with Chris Hemsworth starring as the leading man in each.

The news of Extraction 3 first came at Netflix’s live TUDUM event that took place in June 2023. Below is a screenshot of the event where Hargrave and Hemsworth were up on stage to announce that a third movie was in talks.

“Is anyone interested in seeing more of Tyler Rake in the future?” Hemsworth asked an obliging audience, adding, “Between us as friends, we’re already talking about Extraction 3 thanks to the response.”

Some are slightly worried that “talking about” isn’t quite the same as being greenlit, but in a subsequent email, Netflix was clearer with the language stating: “Chris Hemsworth announced this weekend at Tudum: A Global Fan Event that a third film is in the works.”

Netflix Is Also Developing a Video Game for Extraction

In October 2023, on The Town podcast hosted by Puck co-founder Matthew Belloni, he revealed that as part of Netflix’s expansion into video games – which began in November 2021 and has expanded to over 70 titles – Netflix will soon include an adaptation of the action movie into a full-fledged game.

It is unclear what genre it falls into, what platforms it’ll include, and who’s developing it.

How did Extraction 2 perform on Netflix?

In the first week of the service, the movie was watched for a total of 88.4 million hours. The week saw a radical change in how Netflix tracks its weekly top tens by introducing its new view count. To calculate the number of views, you divide the total number of hours viewed by the Movie/Show’s total runtime in hours.

For Extraction 2, in its first week, you take the 88,400,000 hours viewed and divide it by the movie’s 124-minute run time (2.04 in hours), which equates to 42.8 million views, seeing the movie head straight to the top of the charts that week.

If we benchmark that opening week compared to other movie debuts in 2023, we can see it only was outperformed by Murder Mystery and The Mother:

By the end of its first 91 days on Netflix, the movie had racked up enough views to kick out Spenser Confidential from the overall Top 10 and now ranks as number 10 in the list as of October 15th, just narrowly short of the number of views the first Extraction picked up:

Who are the cast members of Extraction 3?

For now, the only cast member we can 100% confirm is Chris Hemsworth, who will be reprising their role as Tyler Rake.

Moving into the realm of speculation, we expect Idris Elba could reprise his role as Alcott and Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan.

What is the production status of Extraction 3?

Official Production Status: In Development (Last Updated: 22/06/2023)

All we know for now is that the movie is in development, which the studio is still in the very early stages of. Scripts, casting, and pre-production will take up a lot of time before filming can begin on Extraction 3.

Both of the previous two movies began filming in November, running for four months before ending in March.

No production has been penciled in as of the update in October 2023.

When will Extraction 3 be on Netflix?

Given the ongoing Hollywood strikes and it being unclear how far along the development of the project is thus far, we can only predict a late 2024 but more likely 2025 release window for the third entry.
